Compost Turners: The Driving Force of Aerobic Fermentation

In the production of organic and bio-organic fertilizers, the compost turner plays a pivotal role in transforming organic waste into stable humus, serving as the driving engine of the entire aerobic fermentation system. Its operating principle is both simple and efficient: the machine travels along windrow or channel-style compost piles, using blades or paddles welded to a rotating main shaft to cut deep into the material, vigorously mixing and turning the upper and lower layers as well as the outer and inner sections. This action introduces abundant fresh oxygen into the pile, providing the electron acceptors necessary for aerobic microbial respiration; simultaneously, it releases carbon dioxide, water vapor, and ammonia trapped in the pore spaces, breaks up clumps, and adjusts the physical structure of the material.

The frequency and depth of turning directly influence fermentation temperature and duration. Typically, turning the pile every 1–2 days maintains the core temperature within the 55–65°C range—sufficient to rapidly decompose organic matter and eliminate pathogens and insect eggs, while preventing carbonization and nutrient loss caused by localized overheating. Various models are available to suit different operational sites and production capacities: self-propelled wheel-type turners are ideal for large-scale outdoor windrow fermentation, with large-diameter rotors capable of processing piles up to 2 meters wide and 1.5 meters high in a single pass; channel-type turners operate on rails within fermentation channels, making them suitable for intensive indoor facilities due to their compact footprint and ease of integration with deodorization systems; meanwhile, chain-plate and twin-screw turners offer specialized solutions for unique materials or feedstocks with high moisture content. Modern turners generally feature hydraulic drives and crawler tracks with continuously variable transmission (CVT), allowing them to automatically adjust turning speed based on material resistance; they are also equipped with intelligent temperature probes that monitor deep-pile temperatures in real-time, guiding operators to schedule turning intervals scientifically.

For high-nitrogen, high-moisture feedstocks such as chicken and pig manure, professional-grade compost turners feature enhanced corrosion-resistant sealing and anti-tangling designs. The performance of the turner directly determines the completeness of the fermentation process and the quality of the final matured organic fertilizer; without efficient and reliable turning equipment, large-scale, industrial organic fertilizer production would be impossible.
